How to Choose Modern Kitchen Cabinets (July 3, 2009)

Modern kitchen cabinets can be less expensive than traditional kitchen cabinets. You may be able to refinish the cabinets that you already have for a more streamlined look. Either way, going modern can help a small kitchen feel bigger. Modern style is all about simplicity & loving the basic form & function of pieces instead of really trying to dress things up. It can be difficult to know how to choose modern kitchen cabinets & how much to pay for them, but it's well worth it in the end.

Step 1

Keep it sleek. Modern kitchen cabinets don't necessarily have to be made out of wood. If you choose a wood door, look for something that doesn't have a lot of grain to it. Go for a darker color or exotic wood that will be very striking. Also look for cabinets with clean lines. Some cabinets add a little pizazz by having stainless steel legs on the lower cabinets. Just make sure that you are comfortable with cleaning underneath these cabinets.

Step 2

It seems like modern kitchen cabinets are at one extreme or the other. The basic colors seem to be black or white. Every once in awhile, you will see a shiny bright red or orange finish. The point of having a modern kitchen is that it seems updated. This also means that it can seem outdated as soon as the styles change. Since cabinets are so expensive to replace, choose a style that will be able to transition into whatever the next trend may be.

Step 3

Modern kitchen cabinets can start to look a little bit dreary or even plain. Spruce them up by having plexiglass added to a few of the cabinet doors. Plexi has come a long ways in recent years. You can choose a bright color, a frosted sheet, or even plexi that looks like textured glass. Just make sure that you put this only on the cabinets where you store your display items like stemware & dishes. That way, people won't be able to tell what breakfast cereal you eat right off the bat.

Step 4

Turn functional pieces into works of art. Modern kitchens don't use a lot of accessories. This means that the items that you do have in your room really need to make a statement. Invest the money that you would have spent on accessories into a new kitchen faucet that has an unusual shape to it. You can even hang pendant lights over your island for a splash of color.
