How to Get Country Kitchen Cabinets (June 30, 2009)

Country kitchen cabinets really make a huge transformation in a room. You can probably use what you already have in your kitchen. This can save you tens of thousands of dollars. Plus, you'll be able to add a personal touch to your home & get things exactly the way that you want them. Here is how to transform a blah cupboard door into country kitchen cabinets.

Step 1

Add in bead board. This is a simple & inexpensive way to update your existing doors to more of a country kitchen cabinet style. Just cut out the centers of a few of your cabinet doors & replace them with bead board. This is a custom touch that will make your room look designer. You can even buy these doors on ebay & they are a lot less expensive then even shopping at a hardware store for your cabinetry.

Step 2

Mimic the look of furniture. If your island looks elegant, people will notice it & not pay so much attention to the rest of your kitchen. Add legs, corbels & moldings to give it a high end look. This way it will look like a unique piece of furniture. This works fantastic if you live in a subdivision where all of the houses look the same. It will really differentiate you from the rest of the neighborhood.

Step 3

Distress it. This doesn't mean that you have to take a belt sander to your country door. You want your country kitchen cabinets to look aged, not like they are about to fall off the hinges. Use a glaze just around the molding on the door, or use a color that is close to your paint color. Make sure that your brush strokes all go in the direction of natural wood & use a light hand so things don't start looking too busy.

Step 4

Make it elegant. A few years ago stencils & faux finishes were all the rage. If you don't have wood cabinet doors, accept that. Embrace painted cabinets. Work with what you've got. It will end up looking a lot better in the long run.

Step 5

A few years ago, oak was the most popular wood of choice for every kitchen cabinet design style. Now, the trends have moved onto other things. These are also one of the least expensive wood cabinets you can buy. You may feel like you are stuck with oak cabinets. Try staining them a funky color like a country sage green or go with a unique mahogany finish that will make your wood look a lot more expensive.
