How to Replace Kitchen Cabinet Doors (July 3, 2009)

The kitchen cabinets are the focal point of the kitchen, so when the doors are worn or broken it makes the whole kitchen look bad. Replacing an entire kitchen full of cabinets can be quite expensive, so it makes sense to only replace the doors if they are the only part that is worn. By only replacing the doors you can save money, and it's easy to do. This project should only take a couple of hours depending on how many cabinets you have.

   Step 1
   
   

   Remove the old doors by unscrewing them from the hinges. Leave the hinges attached to the cabinet boxes.

   Attach a new door to the hinges already installed on the cabinet boxes. Hold the door up to the hinges and make a mark where the screws go into the hinges. Predrill the holes for the screws so you don't split the wood on your new cabinet door. This will also make it easier to screw the door right onto the hinges. Do not tighten the screws all the way. Adjust the door to make sure it is level by adjusting the hinge. Tighten the screws.

   Place the knobs or handles where you want them on the new door and make a mark. Measure up from the bottom of the cabinet and in from the side to that mark. Mark each cabinet with those measurements so that all the knobs or handles will be in the same place on each door.

   Predrill the holes for the screws and attach the knobs or handles.
