Bathtubs in Modern Bathrooms

posted by Kitchen & Bathroom Designer

When designing small bathrooms, the bathtub becomes the most prominent feature and should be considered first. Place the fixture end of a recessed or built-in bathtub on an inside wall. You can then have a removable panel in the wall so you can easily repair pipes. Standard size bath tubs for modern bathrooms vary in dimensions and layout options. Built-in tubs without a wide rim are usually 30 inches in width, while with a wide rim they are 36 inches wide. The length is 5 to 6 feet long, and fit into less space than a tub on legs or free standing tub. Moreover, there are no exposed pipes. Regardless of the type of vanity or sink you choose for your bathroom design, it is important to have it at a height that is right for most members of your family. You can place a wall hung sink at whatever height is best.

Bathroom Remodeling Ideas for the Contemporary Home

posted by Kitchen & Bathroom Designer

When it comes to contemporary home design finding bathroom remodeling ideas seems to be hit or miss. As I research this subject I often find more traditional solutions or even “touch up” jobs. One great aspect about working for Furniture Fashion is the amount of time I spend discovering new companies and products. These ideas are design or makeover examples from a German company called Alape. Alape has been in the business for over 120 years doing bathroom design for both residential and commercial installations. Whether you are seeking a remodeling or initial build, I would encourage you to research all the possibilities out there. Here is a link to their photo gallery.

Small Bathroom Remodeling Ideas Can Make Big Difference

There were some homes built that contain a bathroom that seems to have been an afterthought in the construction process. Many are no bigger than a small walk-in closet and when the time comes, homeowners may be looking for some small bathroom remodeling ideas to make it more user-friendly. They may be tired of banging their elbows on the wall when they try to comb their hair or have to keep the towels in another room so they are looking for small bathroom remodeling ideas to help make it easier and more convenient.

Acquiring an extra few feet of floor space in your small bathroom is possible, it is al according to what you have in your bathroom now, if you have a bathtub in your bathroom you can gain some space by ripping out the tub and replacing it with a newly installed shower stall. The extra floor gained by using these small bathroom remodeling ideas can allow for the installation of a small cabinet or dresser in which to store towels and other personal items used in the bathroom.

There are also small bathroom remodeling ideas that can make the room appear larger than it really is such as using light colors on the walls and on any window coverings. Additionally, if possible a shade or mini-blind that fits into the window instead of attaching to the outer trim of the window can make the room appear bigger. Vertical lines can also make the room appear larger while heavy horizontal lines can make it feel smaller.

Remove Unnecessary Cabinets And Walls

Many of the smaller bathrooms were built with a dividing wall to separate the commode from the rest of the bathroom. I understand that it seemed like a very good idea at the moment, but most small bathroom remodeling ideas consider removing everything in the room to provide more room in the overall planning. When you talk about dividers and a very small bathroom i would say that most of the time you will have no more than one person in the bathroom at one time so adding in a divider probably is not a good idea as it would only take up more space.

It may be necessary to trim some space from an adjacent room and expand the bathroom, and many small bathroom remodeling ideas include this prospect. Having a small bathroom when you are doing a remodel can be very frustrating, what you want to try to do from the beginning is save a space about 6 to 12 inches along just one wall in your bathroom, this will save a considerable amount of space in a small bathroom remodel. Before you fail at this make sure that you always use cabinets that are built into the wall, never use cabinets that mount to the wall. The floor space that you have is never going to change, but the idea is to not use any more of it up than you absolutely have to.

Thematic Ideas For Your Bathroom Design

posted by Kitchen & Bathroom Designer

Antique Bathroom Vanity   Bathroom Vanity Cabinets

When thinking of a new bathroom design, go with themes. This is the easiest way to achieve an interior design project. Here are just some of the most distinct and popular bathroom themes.

Mediterranean

Mediterranean design is innately luxurious. It mainly consists of arches and curves, which add instant elegance to any home. Countertops, windows and archways should be soft, curved and pleasing in appearance.

Materials and accents: Choose natural materials. Marble would be great for your flooring, fixtures and countertops. Wrought iron and ceramics are almost essential in any Mediterranean theme. You can simply place wrought iron candleholders and earthenware by your fixtures and windows.

Color: Choose bright, bold colors such as canary yellow and cobalt blue. You can use these colors on one or more walls. You can also use colorful accents, mosaic tiles and Rustic paint finish.

Country

Country style is all about warmth and comfort. This means you’d want some texture and homeliness in your bathroom design. Most of this should come from natural material.

Materials and accents: Wood has natural textures and patterns that make a bathroom nice and cozy. Install wooden steps on the side of your built-in bathtub. Or, you can replace your bathtub with an old-style claw-foot tub. You can also choose to go with a wooden countertop. Use wicker baskets or wooden pegs for your towels. Glass jars are very country and functional as well. You can store cotton balls and Q-tips in them.

Color: For this theme, depend on the natural color of your materials. Since wood comes in a variety of shades and patterns, you have lots of choices. You can have rich, darker colors from mahogany, lighter colors from elm and exquisite patterns from cocobolo wood.

Zen

Zen is all about harmony and spiritual stillness. You’d want your bathroom to be relaxing and uplifting. This means more space and less bold elements.

Materials and accents: You can choose any material as long as they balance each other out. For instance, hard stone tile flooring should be complimented with soft, fluffy rugs.  A warm, traditional wooden backdrop can contrast a cold stainless steel showerhead. If you have a square countertop, pair it with a round mirror.

Color: Color combinations should also be balanced. For instance, dark-colored natural stone flooring can be matched with lighter and smoother wall tiles. But whichever colors you wish to contrast, stick to muted or faint ones like pale green. Bold colors can be distracting.

Modern

Modern design is all about functionality. So fixtures generally serve more than one purpose. In fact, designers today are already merging function and design to give you the best of both worlds.

Materials and accents: Modern materials include stainless steel, glass and fiberglass. Stainless steel is extremely durable while glass and fiberglass is very easy to clean. An elegantly arched steel spout can act as a piece of sculpture in your bathroom. A round, glass sink over your countertop makes a very interesting focal point. Your shower enclosure can be made entirely of fiberglass to give your whole bathroom the illusion of space.

Color: Take advantage of any color to add more personality. You can have a plain tile wall with a few brightly colored tiles to add interest. Or, you can have an all-black or all-white backdrop with colorful accents/fixtures to go against it.

As you can see, planning your bathroom design with a theme in mind is a lot of fun. Themes also make shopping for fixtures and accessories so much easier. Google bathroom themes for more ideas.

An Introduction To Bathroom Cabinets

An Introduction To Bathroom Cabinets

Corner Bathroom Vanity   Bathroom Vanity Cabinets

Installing bathroom cabinets is a great way to expand bath storage. The idea here is to create more space as well as style in your bathroom. This article will talk about the types, styles, materials and lighting of bathroom cabinets.

Types

The four main types of bathroom cabinets are cabinetry, open shelving, over the toilet cabinets and linen closets. Cabinetry is basically a cabinet that has an enclosure, which is typically a slab of wood that can be opened or shut with a handle. Sometimes, the enclosure may appear to have no handle at all, but instead can be opened from the bottom. Open shelving may come with cabinetry and can be used for placing towels and other personal items. Over the toilet cabinets are those mounted on a wall over the toilet for extra storage. Finally, linen closets are built from the flooring up to the ceiling where baskets are inserted into the structure to store linens and other belongings.

Styles

The basic bathroom cabinet styles are the face frame and frameless vanity cabinets. Face frame vanity cabinets have a storage box that is typically framed. On the other hand, frameless vanity cabinets have a storage box that are made of extremely durable material and typically has no frame. The absence of a frame gives any bathroom cabinet a more contemporary feel to it.

Materials

The material of a bathroom cabinet is usually wood. Many prefer this material because it is both durable and elegant at the same time. However, there also cabinets that are made of plastic, but still resemble wood. Wooden material offers a variety of textures, colors and patterns. Your wooden bathroom cabinet may be whitewashed with a bisque finish, colorwash stained, or painted with solid-colored paint. A faux finish can even be applied to the wooden material so that the surface looks like marble or other completely different materials.

One of the most durable materials is oak. It is formal and has an open grain. You can choose from a variety of colors including yellow, white and red. Cherry is a hard wood that is best known for its beautiful grain. It also varies greatly in color. Pine is a less expensive alternative. This type of wood has a rustic appearance and is therefore great for Mediterranean-style bathrooms. Most wood can look great with a dark stain. This gives any cabinet a more timeless and classic look.

Lighting

Vanity cabinets typically have mirrors. This is where good lighting becomes essential. Everyone needs good lighting while shaving or putting on makeup. Sometimes the lighting fixtures from your bathroom ceilings just won’t provide enough light.

A bathroom cabinet can have a simple bar at the top that lights up. This is a cleaner design best for modern/contemporary bathrooms. Other cabinets may have sconces or wall lamps by their sides installed separately on the wall.

Choosing bathroom cabinets can be confusing at first. There are so many styles, materials and other fixtures to consider. However, start by basing your decision on budget and lifestyle. Shopping for a new bathroom cabinet should become easier this way.

Basic Planning For Your Bathroom Vanity

posted by Kitchen & Bathroom Designer

 Unique Bathroom Vanity

When was the last time you really checked your bathroom vanity? Many of us are concerned about the appearance of our home, but rarely our bathroom vanities. It would definitely make sense to include the vanity as part of our interior motives; after all, we use it more than we realize. When planning on having a bathroom remodeled or newly built, there are some things to consider. Think about how much space you have, what design and style you want, and the best materials to use.

Ceramic Bathroom Vanity

Space

Space is a very important factor you should consider. Bathrooms tend to be tight or cluttered, so be careful in choosing your fixtures. Remodel based on your comfort. Even if you have massive, beautifully carved European cabinets and mirror, placing them in a tiny space will make them look awkward and you’ll feel claustrophobic. Design and style matters a lot when working with your bathroom space and will be exemplified below.

Design and Style

Design and style matters because you’ll be using your bathroom all the time. So choose according to your personality over what your peers or the salespeople tell you. Consider what’s aesthetically pleasing to you, if you like more or less detail, etc. You can choose from traditional, Victorian, modern and contemporary designs. Since modern styles are often more compact and have cleaner lines, they are great for smaller bathrooms. If you’re only replacing your bathroom vanities, remember to complement your walls and flooring.

Secondly, think about trends twice. Today, there are so many modern, hip and extremely affordable designs to choose from. Modern colors you’ll notice are avocado green, crimson red, and black. However trendy, realize you’ll be having your bathroom for a long time. You might want to check out designs that last a lifetime. For example, you can always go with muted colors like light beige, off-white or butter yellow.

Material

No matter what design and style you go with, durability is important. Consider stain resistance, scratch resistance and water resistance. You don’t have to have all these qualities in one fixture, just base your decision on what you’re very particular about. Some materials available are wood, stone and glass.

Wood is extremely versatile. It has such a wide variety of colors, and its textures can be quite exquisite. For instance, the finish can be distressed to appear antiqued. Stone tops like the granite ones are extremely durable and can give that luxurious appeal. Using glass in fixtures is a very modern approach. It gives a clean and crisp look to any bathroom. Other adventurous materials you can check out are concrete and steel.

Planning your bathroom vanity doesn’t have to cost a fortune. If budget is on top of your priority list, there are now ways to cut down the costs. For instance, a wooden look can now be achieved with lamination and fiberglass can appear like real glass. In fact, inexpensive techniques can simulate just about any material these days. Just remember some expensive materials like the low-maintenance and stronger ones can last longer than others. This means they can also be advantageous in the long run.

Bathroom Remodeling Ideas

posted by Kitchen & Bathroom Designer

Bathroom remodeling is both challenging and rewarding. Once all is done, you’ll be surprised just how much you can benefit from a successful project. A great bathroom can help you relax and simply indulge in luxury. Read on for basic remodeling ideas.

Black Bathroom Vanity

Faucet

The faucet is typically the focal point of the bathroom. Two-handle faucets allow you to have hot and cold controls. A single handle can be conveniently swung from top to bottom for flow control and left to right for temperature control. There are lengthy, arching goosenecks that are sleek and handy for filling tall containers. Look for designs that suit your taste and overall comfort.

To add an interesting touch, use enamel coatings. These come in a wide variety of colors. Stainless steel finishes are more expensive but these are also more durable. Ask suppliers about scratch, stain and water resistant finishes. There are actually finishes that are brushed and disguise scratches well.

Your sink needs to go with the spout and handle. A common material used is ceramic, but now you can choose from steel and glass (these are great for modern/contemporary bathrooms). Countertops come in a wide range of materials too, such as granite, concrete and fiberglass.

Vanity Mirror

A vanity mirror should go well with your faucet or countertop. For instance, if your countertop is wooden, it’s best to have a mirror with a wooden frame. Chrome edged mirrors are the most affordable and are best for covering an entire wall where the faucet is located. These will make any bathroom larger in appearance. For more texture, choose beveled mirrors, which are “chiseled” on the sides for that elegant look. Make sure your vanity mirror isn’t too big or too small for your faucet/countertop.

Shower Stall And Bathtubs

The shower stall shouldn’t be overlooked in a bathroom remodeling plan. To create more space in your bathroom, you can have a shower-bathtub combination or shower stall with sliding doors. If you want a bathtub, consider its size and the overall design of your bathroom. Think about how many people can use it and of course how comfortable it will be for you. If you have an antique bathroom design, go for a porcelain claw-foot tub to match. A built-in bathtub looks great with modern bathrooms.

Tiles

There are tons of tiles to choose from. For that traditional look, choose harlequin patterns in almost any color combination you prefer. Bold combinations include black and white and other contrasting colors. For that natural, outdoorsy look, choose stone tiles. These have great texture and do not require occasional polishing. If you’re concerned about budget, don’t worry. Cheaper materials can now mimic the more expensive tile materials.

Lighting

Lighting really matters in a bathroom. You’d want to be able to feel great in front of your vanity mirror. First, make sure lighting is bright enough for you to use your mirror properly (for shaving/putting on makeup) and pleasant enough that it won’t make your skin look pale or greenish. So instead of using fluorescent lights, try incandescent bulbs.

Furthermore, spread lighting all over your bathroom to prevent shadowing. You can install fixtures on both sides of your mirror or use interesting hanging fixtures. Remember your lighting fixtures should also match other bathroom fixtures.

Now that you have some bathroom remodeling ideas, start shopping around. You can search for the best suppliers online. Suppliers now offer remodeling kits to make the job much easier. Whatever your plan is, remember your taste and comfort is what matters most.

Bathroom Cabinet Countertops Cost-Marble Formica or Granite With Sinks

posted by Kitchen & Bathroom Designer

One of the things that some people do not consider when they are shopping for bathroom vanity countertops is the cost of the sink. This is something that needs to be considered if you are working on a middle class income. Cultured marble tops generally have the sinks molded into the tops form already. Of the three, granite, Formica or cultured marble having the sink already formed into the top, which one is a less expensive route to take.
Obviously, there really is no comparison with the cost of a granite countertop in relation to a plastic laminate Formica counter. The granite top is generally going to cost more unless you find a steel of a deal at Home Depot or from a stone countertop manufacture.
Sometimes by getting on the phone and calling around town to local top suppliers, a defective one can be found for a great price. The biggest disadvantage to this is that you have to work with the design and make your cabinets fit the top.

Here’s the countertop cost breakdown
1) Plastic laminate tops with sinks are more expensive than cultured marble ones with a sink. This calculation takes into consideration the costs associated with hiring a plumber to install the sink into the Formica top.

2) The cost of granite with a sink is going to be more than Formica or cultured marble.

Bathroom vanity tops come in many selections and price ranges. What the final cost turns out to be will be directly related to the cost of the sinks and hiring a professional plumber to install them.

The Contemporary Style – Corner Glass Vessel Sink Vanity

posted by Kitchen & Bathroom Designer

The Contemporary-Style 23” Balboa Corner Glass Vessel Sink Vanity

Modern bathroom design has been steadily transitioning into a “simple is better” mentality over the last decade, and bathroom vanities have been following a similar trend. Take, for instance, the 23” Balboa corner vanity. Simultaneously striking and subtle in its design, the Balboa does seem to attract attention. But that’s the interesting thing about it: the Balboa doesn’t really try to attract attention. Modern vanities tend to maximize your space, at the cost of sacrificing all those extraneous design flourishes. It should be noted that most modern bathroom vanities are very eye-catching despite their simple design, and the Balboa is no exception. Its wedge-shaped countertop is made from clear tempered glass, and its round edge is very smooth. The shape and choice of material for this vanity is very effective, and the Balboa will really draw attention to any corner it’s installed in.

The Balboa is a wall mounted bathroom vanity, which adds to its visual appeal but also gives you plenty of leg room (or storage space) underneath the countertop. The Balboa is not equipped with shelving space, as is the trend with many contemporary bathroom vanities. This means if you’re an organization fanatic, you may want to find a vanity that better suits your needs. A towel rack is provided, however, and the built-in vessel sink does leave some countertop space for your toiletries. Overall, the Balboa is a great example of modern design principles in the contemporary bathroom, and its relatively low cost (about $480 at Bathgems) makes it a fine addition to any home. You can find more information about this product by clicking here.
