French kitchens

posted by Kitchen & Bathroom Designer

The french are famous for their stylish food and it’s therefore no surprise that many people want a french-style kitchen in their own home.

For a rustic design with timeless style, go French.

French kitchens are a mixture of country style rustic and traditional kitchen design which can be a difficult image to get right if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Here are a few tips to keep you on track:

  • The majority of french kitchens have a table which is used for both food preparation and sitting around to eat.
  • Cupboards, tables, chairs and any other furniture should be wooden and very simple designs. A french kitchen has no place for metallic objects, other than pots and pans.
  • A stone tiled floor immediately creates a french kitchen feel, but if you prefer something warmer there are alternatives. However, lino and similar products are not viable options if you want to remain authentic in your design.
  • You might consider painting the walls a warm colour and using stencils to create a Fromagerie feel. If you’d prefer to remain more neutral, white walls are perfectly fine and will work well against the wooden furniture. However, to avoid your kitchen walls looking sparce, you can buy metallic french wall signs which look great and are normally inexpensive.
  • Storage in a french kitchen is designed to be funcitional. Cooking utensils are normally on display and within easy reach for the convenience of the chef. Open shelving might be considered or hanging pots and pans overhead on carefully placed hooks.

Retro Kitchen Design Sets and Ideas

Retro Kitchen Design Sets and Ideas

It is fun to once in a while look back and see what was considered cool and trendy during the past. In this post we take a look at the kitchens of yesteryear – those from 1920s to 1960s.

Kitchens then used bold colors like yellow, blue and jadeite green with checkerboard floors and vivid patterns. Also prominent were the painted cabinets, glass knobs, vintage linens and conspicuous electrical appliances that were meant to be used for long periods. In those days, the throwaway mentality was unheard of and people preferred to repair and re-use rather than replace.

Finding retro kitchens on the web is not an easy task. We could always use more help. If you come across any retro kitchen that you think need to be featured here, please mention them in the comments. Also we run a steady stream of cool posts like this at Home Designing and if you like to be notified when we have more such inspiring posts, please subscribe to our feed or newsletter!

Rare as they come, there are actually a few terrific websites out there that are dedicated to documenting and digitizing past kitchens. Antique Home Styles is one such website and we would highly recommend them if you are on the look out for such kitchens. Here are a few snaps from their collection:

23 (Very) Beautiful French Kitchens23-(Very)-Beautiful-French-Kitchens

Here are a set of very beautiful kitchens from French kitchen maker Perene. Perene’s portfolio is impressive with a set of luxury kitchens targeted at the high-end market and to those who do not mind giving an extra dollar for quality. Though majority of their designs can be classifed as ‘modern’, each kitchen is not without its own twist of style. Fancy decor, custom wall art and other curios lend each design its own flavour.

Hats off to the designer here…and yeah, the photographer too!

Choosing a style for your new kitchen and selecting from the endless options of materials available can be daunting. What materials suite your style? Are Vanilla Bean Glaze cabinets with Antique Copper hardware the perfect fit for your country kitchen? Searching for a streamlined stainless steel faucet to coordinate with your contemporary kitchen? Hoping to design a traditional kitchen around granite counter tops? Perhaps soft metallic blinds will blend with the sleek materials in your modern kitchen.

Choosing your style, as well as materials, is an important venture. On average, consumers who are remodeling their kitchen spend about 16 percent of their budget on labor; the remaining is spent on materials. Exciting advances in materials at every budget level are available which are beautiful, practical, durable, and environmentally responsible.

Traditional
Architectural details such as crown molding, raised wood paneling and rich, deep colors abound in the traditional kitchen.

Modern
Less is more in the modern kitchen where sleek, straight and clean lines allow the colors and materials to shine.

Contemporary
A natural setting with a current bent including contrasting textures and bold accents create a contemporary design in the kitchen.

Country
A rustic, weathered look can create a warm, cozy feeling in a country style kitchen.

Italian kitchen design

posted by Kitchen & Bathroom Designer

Italian kitchen design involves creating a work friendly environment that’s equally as welcoming as it is effective. Italian kitchens therefore shouldn’t compromise on style or functionality. Whether you’re creating a modern kitchen design or a country kitchen design, the same set of rules apply for Italian kitchens.

Italian kitchens – style and functionality

A well crafted Italian kitchen design will be everything you’d expect from a nation synonymous with style – sleek surfaces and sharp features, built into a beautifully lit environment. Italian kitchen designs are immediately recognisable because of these features and it’s essential you stay true to them.

Contemporary Italian kitchens are primarily designed to be eye catching and ultra stylish, but that doesn’t mean they compromise on functionality and the basics of kitchen design. More traditional Italian kitchens have a rustic charm and are normally formed with warmer tones and materials but the same rules apply.

If you want a kitchen in your home based on the Italian principles of design, then it’s a good idea to start by thinking about what you use your kitchen for. By doing this you can determine the things you really need and start to eliminate the things you don’t.

Italian kitchen design is all about achieving tasteful lines so getting the right fittings is also essential. Therefore, it’s a good idea to consult with a number of companies to ensure you get the precise look you’re after.

By embracing these two simple ideas you can give yourself the best chance of achieving a bespoke, contemporary, Italian kitchen design.

We have more information on Italian kitchen design in the articles below and can also divert you to a number of the leading suppliers and manufacturers of Italian kitchens.

Kitchen Remodel Ideas That Will Achieve a Modern Look For Any Budget

kitchen-remodel-ideas.jpg

Kitchen Remodel Ideas. You’ve finally decided that you have to update your kitchen before it drives you mad. You have been staring at the same four walls, dingy cupboards, and worn floor for way too long now. You are tired of squeezing past the counters when the fridge door is open, and throwing stuff into another room just to make room for food preparation on your counters when it’s time for a family dinner at your house. You will need some careful planning if you are going to attempt implementing some of your kitchen remodel ideas. The fundamental components of a kitchen remodel project undertaking are all the same whether it be a big job or a little one. You choose your style which could be modern, contemporary, grandma’s old country kitchen, or a wild and crazy look all your own. Certain color paints will look better with various appliances and cupboards. You would not want to choose a dark color on your walls if you already have dark oak cupboards or a deep dark marble floor. Choosing materials to work with can often be a stressful event. If you stick to your budget, you will not risk ending up short on cash if your original home decorating ideas do not work out

If you need to replace your cupboards, you can try looking in the local paper or in the online classifieds for deals. If you can get away with just a fresh coat of paint, new doors, or even glass panels for a modern look without the cost, then you may want to consider that option.

Flooring options no longer need to be a concern. You can get laminate flooring tiles for even a few dollars a tile. Counter tops can run you a pretty penny if you do not do some homework first. You do not need to spend thousands of dollars on stone, marble, stainless steel, or solid surface choices when you can spend a third of the price for laminate or ceramic counter tops. These lower cost counter top surfaces are a great way to incorporate your kitchen remodel ideas into a newer more modern look everyone will enjoy. Other benefits to this type of counter top are the ease of cleaning, and the resistance to slashes, dents or scratches from food preparation.

Although brand new stainless steel appliances may be a desire in completing you kitchen remodel ideas these can be an unnecessary cost if the appliances you currently have are working well. If you find your current appliances seem crowded or make your kitchen appear smaller than you would like, wait until your favorite department store has a sale, or hunt down a wholesaler who may have a price you can afford.

Antique Kitchen Cabinets

Maple Kitchen Furnitures

The one thing about antique kitchen cabinets is that they have never gone out of style and likely never will, no matter what other types of décor move in and out of the current trends.

Even with the latest in technological developments, electrical appliances, tools, gadgets, and fashionable colors, these, just like country kitchen cabinets, will always have their place in the room that is the true heart of most homes.  The difference that the older style makes is that even with all of the modern accessories, it still has charm and appeal, while never looking out of place.

Antique kitchen cabinets can seem perfectly right even when hanging next to microwave ovens, digital coffee makers, and an electric hand mixer.  In fact, they have the ability to calm the overall stark and harsh appearance that all of these technological pieces can often bring about with their shining plastics and stainless steel. While your room still remains functional, it also keeps a comfortable overall feeling because of the border of the cupboard style.

This means that when you decide on antique kitchen cabinets, you can still design the rest of the room exactly as you’d like it to be.  Even if you choose colder elements, you can be reassured that the cupboard doors will keep the room from becoming uninviting.

Antique Kitchen Cabinets – Where To Find Them

So now that you’ve decided that antique kitchen cabinets are for you, where do you go about finding them so that you can select the precise look for your own home?  The answer to this question is multifaceted.  After all, you can buy actual pieces from times past, making sure that they have been well maintained so that you won’t be investing in problems.  Or, you can buy brand new ones that have been specially designed and “antiqued” to look as though you’ve had these cupboards since a time long ago when things were still lovingly and simply built.

Your third option is to have a look at what you currently have and decide whether you can turn those into the style of antique kitchen cabinets or antique country kitchen cabinets without actually replacing anything.  Often, all you need is a stain in a dark color and the right kind of hardware such as hinges, knobs, and drawer pulls.

If staining isn’t the look you’re going for, then distressing can also give that feeling of a piece that has gracefully aged throughout the years.  This has to do with sanding down wooden country kitchen cabinets instead of adding color to the wood that you then fade out.  There are many techniques for doing this.  If you aren’t certain how, you can look up helpful guides online or talk to someone at a home renovation store who may be able to show you how.

Shaker Kitchen Cabinets

Shaker Kitchen Cabinets

shaker-kitchen-cabinets.jpg

If you’re thinking of replacing the cabinetry in your home, then shaker kitchen cabinets offer you a unique style opportunity that you cannot obtain through other types of décor.

After all, whether you’re choosing country kitchen cabinets or something completely contemporary, these are a big decision and are one that will last for many years to come.  In fact, the odds are that what you currently have in your kitchen are the original cupboards that were there when you bought the house.

Though not entirely difficult to do, changing the cupboards and drawers is a significant home renovation project and can be rather expensive.  It’s not something you’ll want to do frequently, but when you do decide that it’s time, you want to do it right.

Over the last couple of decades, there has been a significant improvement in the styles, colors, and varieties of cabinetry that are available.  They used to be rather drab and merely functional, but are now a central part of the décor of the room.

Shaker Kitchen Cabinets – Expanding Variety

There are well over a dozen different types from which you can choose, including quite stark and streamlined and the much warmer cottage or country kitchen cabinets.  Then again, for those of us who would like to benefit from the best of both worlds, there are also shaker kitchen cabinets.

Making the final choice can seem like quite the daunting task and is often something that is dreaded by people who are seeking to redecorate or renovate.  However, it can in actuality be a rather pleasant experience if you keep an open mind, give yourself enough time to look around and become familiar with what is available, and just relax.

Of course, you could always pay an interior designer to do it for you, but there is something much more meaningful about making your own selections for each of the details that will be making up the complete atmosphere of your kitchen.  Start simply, by shopping online, for example, and then you can work your way up to wandering through home renovation stores to see what they have to offer and to get a feel for the materials.

Shaker kitchen cabinets are increasing in their popularity because they allow homeowners to enjoy a modern styling in an overall traditional piece.  If you like features from both types of décor but would rather not have to choose between them, then you might find that this compromise decorating style is extremely appealing. It truly combines the most attractive elements of both types of décor. They are simple, elegant designs that come in many colors and looks.

The simplicity of shaker kitchen cabinets allows you to keep a most classic look while using other elements of the room – such as the decorating accessories – to make any bolder statements that you’d like to add.

Country Kitchen Cabinets

Country Kitchen Cabinets

country-kitchen-cabinets.jpg

When it comes to creating a certain style in your kitchen, country kitchen cabinets like these can make all the difference in the final result.

The kitchen is, after all, one of the most important rooms of the house in which to create a pleasant and appealing atmosphere since it is where you and your family will be spending a great deal of your time throughout the day.  It should not only be attractive, but it should also work very practically to allow you to navigate around it easily, obtain what you need, and complete your tasks such as food preparation and service.

In this effort, country kitchen cabinets perform exceptionally well.  They are not only designed with a durable, usable framework in mind, but they also reflect the welcoming draw of the style of the countryside. Since they are at eye-level around a significant portion of the walls of the kitchen, they are also among the first things that people see and will create the largest impact on the atmosphere of the room.  Therefore, if you’re looking for a warm and comfortable ambiance, then these may be just what you’re looking for. These cabinets differ from, say, contemporary kitchen cabinets or European kitchen cabinets which tend to be sleeker and blend in with the rest of the decor.

Country Kitchen Cabinets Come In Multiple Styles

Furthermore, country kitchen cabinets are built to stand the test of time, ready to handle the regular frequent use your family will give them.  This being said, there is not a single style of this type of cabinetry.  There are many options from which to choose, including Formal Country, Casual Country, American Country, English Country, and French Country.  Each of these have their own colors, hardware, and overall look.  Your choice depends entirely on your own personal taste. In addition, there are close variations such as antique kitchen cabinets, Shaker kitchen cabinets, and Mission Style kitchen cabinets — and some Italian kitchen cabinets.

Each of these types can be distinguished by looking at their various framing and detail elements.  Among them all, it is the Casual country kitchen cabinets, also often referred to as American country that are the most popular.  The reason that so many people opt for these particular designs is that they bring a cozy home feeling to the room.  It brings to mind a happy farmhouse with cushions and tablecloths in gingham, calico, or patchwork, as well as decorations featuring fruit, chickens, cows, and other farm themes.

There are many different manufacturers that feature the various kinds of country kitchen cabinets among the products they have to offer.  Your choice depends on the style you’re seeking, your budget, and which ones you find the most appealing overall.

Once you’ve made your selection, you can go about decorating the rest of the room, either continuing the overall theme with traditional elements of that kind of décor. Or you can branch away for a more eclectic look that flatters the colors and overall feel of the cabinetry without sticking to the pre-defined boundaries of that decorating style.
