Kitchen Stoveside Organizer

Stoveside Organizer

Whether you use one crock or several, it’s wise to have essential tools in arm’s reach when you’re at the stove. Martha keeps ladles, whisks, pastry brushes, wooden spoons, and flexible spatulas in separate containers.

Rolling Cart

A cart provides storage where you need it. Martha usually parks this stainless steel one, with tools for cooking, by her range. A small freestanding island on wheels can serve the same purpose and is especially useful in a tight kitchen; it provides a work surface and a casual sideboard. “By adding a custom-cut marble top, a rolling cart can also be used as a bar when entertaining,” Martha says.

Also on the rolling cart: Martha’s mise en place — ramekins of various salts and often-used spices. A pinch is easier to gauge with fingers or a spoon than it is with a shaker.

Eco friendly kitchen design

posted by Kitchen & Bathroom Designer

The environment is an increasingly key issue, so wanting to plan an eco friendly kitchen design is understandable. Here are a few tips to creating a green kitchen.

eco-friendly-kitchen-design.jpg

For starters, let’s talk about lighting. Kitchen lights can take up a lot of electricity, especially when being used in the daytime to light up darker areas of the kitchen. An eco-friendly solution is to install a sky light or extra windows to bring as much natural light into the kitchen as possible and limit the amount of electricity needed. Domed skylights allow you to keep UV rays out and still enjoy a bright and airy kitchen.

Your kitchen floor is another area where you can look to be greener. Using materials like bamboo, cork, renewable wood and biodegradable lino are all environmentally friendly alternatives and still function and look great.

Insulation can be eco-friendly and limit the amount of heating you need, saving you money on bills. Spray foam insulation is the latest green craze in kitchen design and keeps the room warm when it gets cold outside.

Much like you floor, you can get your kitchen storage to be produced from environmentally friendly materials such as bamboo or any other kind of sustainably harvested wood. As an added touch, you can get built in recyling units, so it becomes less of a chore to seperate your papers and plastics.

If you want to go the extra mile then you can also get kitchen taps that will only turn on when an object is placed under the faucet. This means that taps won’t be left on when they’re not needed and water won’t be wasted.

To get hot water you can use some eco-friendly solutions like solar powered heaters or tankless water heaters that both reduce the amount of energy needed to turn water hot.

Also consider fitting energy efficient windows which come with a special kind of glass to reduce the amount of UV rays that enter the room but also retain light and heat.

We’ve got more information on eco-friendly kitchen design listed below and can also divert you to some of the leading retailers of environmentally friendly kitchen solutions.

How to Create a Mosaic Countertop

How to Create a Mosaic Countertop

You have been planning your kitchen redesign. You have looked through magazines and watched the home improvement and home decorating shows on television. You saw a simply fabulous kitchen redesign using mosaic tiles to create a pattern on a countertop. You want to do the same. You can do it yourself in a few easy steps.Mosaic Countertop

A mosaic is a decorative design created by setting small colored pieces of tile into a setting such as a countertop. The first thing you want to do is visit a tile shop and look at the tiles and colors that are available. Take some time to research what you want to do. You can find books in the library on creating tile countertops with mosaics. Since you are using tiles for your entire countertop, you will want to buy tiles in the size you need for the major area and complementary colored tiles for the mosaic area. Sketch your idea on a piece of paper before you go shopping. Measure your countertop. The salesperson as the tile store can help to determine how many tiles you will need for your major surface and how much you should purchase to create your mosaic.Mosaic Countertop

Sketch your pattern onto the surface where you will lay the tiles. Since you are creating a mosaic you want to break up the tiles you will use for it. The easy way to do this is to wrap the tiles in a towel and hit them with a hammer.

You will need small pieces for your mosaic and larger pieces for your border. You can use a tile nibbler to break the tiles into the size you need.Mosaic Countertop

Place the tiles on top of the sketch to make sure you are pleased with the pattern and the colors you have selected. Mark the location of the tiles with a magic marker. When laying the tiles on your countertop, you should start from the center and work outward.Mosaic Countertop

  • The steps in creating your mosaic are:

    1. Prepare the surface by scoring it with a utility knife and then coating the surface with a mixture of watered down white glue.

    2. Spread a thin coat of tile cement (thin set or mortar), about one-eighth of an inch, over the surface.

    3. Score your mortar with a trowel.

    4. Place your tiles in the cement according to the pattern you drew.

    5. After the cement has set, apply tile grout over all the tiles.

    6. Apply the grout with a trowel. Smooth it over all of the seams between the individual tiles.

    7. Wipe away the excess grout with a sponge.

    8. Let it dry overnight.

You can purchase grout in a variety of colors, not just white, to match the decor of your kitchen.

How to Install a Wall Cabinet

posted by Kitchen & Bathroom Designer

    1.
To install wall-mounted cabinets, start by determining their positions and drawing a level horizontal line on the wall where the bottom of each cabinet will be located. Double-check your layout by lightly penciling the cabinets’ dimensions and placement on the wall.

    2.
Align the top edge of a temporary 1-by-3 support rail with the line for the bottom edge of the cabinets and drive three or four 2-inch screws through it into the wall studs.

    3.
Drill pilot holes through the sturdy part of the cabinet back or its support rail into wall studs. Screw the cabinet to the wall using two screws that are long enough to penetrate the studs by at least 1 1/2 inches.

With the push to go “green,” many companies are answering the call. Contractors are among the companies as well as people using eco-friendly products in building and remodeling. Kitchen cabinets are among those items available in eco-friendly terms. Use these steps to learn more about eco-friendly building and how to choose eco-friendly cabinets.

    Step 1

Talk to your contractor. Your contractor will have contacts for eco-friendly cabinets if they are familiar with eco-friendly building and remodeling. Have them ask their cabinet suppliers about eco-friendly cabinet options.

  • Step 2

Check with cabinet makers for eco-friendly options. Many of the major cabinet makers, like Kraftmaid, have eco-friendly cabinets to choose from. Browse their websites to find the ones you are interested in, then get price quotes. The Kraftmaid site allows you to choose by type of wood, the room of the house you are putting cabinets in and the floor plan you want.

  • Step 3

Consider wholesale cabinet makers. Not only is this a cheaper option that from manufacturer’s, but they also offer eco-friendly options, though it is not advertised as often. Compare the wholesale prices with manufacturers’ prices to see if you really will save money on your project. This will also be cheaper than ordering through your contractor.

  • Step 4

Get bamboo cabinets. Bamboo is a beautiful wood and durable to boot. Bamboo is extremely sustainable and is being used more and more in remodeling and building projects, including kitchen cabinets, flooring and other features. Ask your contractor about this option or do the research yourself to find a cabinet manufacturer that offers the bamboo cabinets you want.
