Overhead kitchen light fixtures are a good choice to illuminate the room a lot to allow for proper brightness. However, the design of the floor is very important when trying to create a modern kitchen. The textures and colors chosen will make a statement about the kitchen and tie everything together. Simple hardwood floors or one color tiles are chosen to keep with the simple and sleek feel of modern design. When choosing modern kitchen paint colors, lighting fixtures is another pieces that should be taken into consideration. Simple hanging pendant lighting is also an option that will add to the modern design while also adding brightness to the room. The design of the furniture should also have simplistic lines and match the lines and décor of the rest of the room.

Common to have little curves in the furniture. The most popular modern style furniture has clean straight lines that match the feel of the kitchen cabinet design, refrigerator and countertops. These simplistic lines will add to the functionality of the space while allowing for an area to sit and enjoy a meal. When designing a modern style kitchen there are many aspects to take into consideration to get the correct image and feel. Sticking to monochromatic color tones such as stainless steel metals or dark black tones will create a sleek design. In addition to the simple color tones, having strong clean lines in the kitchen backsplash tiles, furniture, countertops, and refrigerator will create a modern design.

Italian kitchen design involves creating a work friendly environment that’s equally as welcoming as it is effective. Italian kitchens therefore shouldn’t compromise on style or functionality. Whether you’re creating a modern kitchen design or a country kitchen design, the same set of rules apply for Italian kitchens.

Italian kitchens – style and functionality

A well crafted Italian kitchen design will be everything you’d expect from a nation synonymous with style – sleek surfaces and sharp features, built into a beautifully lit environment. Italian kitchen designs are immediately recognisable because of these features and it’s essential you stay true to them.

Contemporary Italian kitchens are primarily designed to be eye catching and ultra stylish, but that doesn’t mean they compromise on functionality and the basics of kitchen design. More traditional Italian kitchens have a rustic charm and are normally formed with warmer tones and materials but the same rules apply.

If you want a kitchen in your home based on the Italian principles of design, then it’s a good idea to start by thinking about what you use your kitchen for. By doing this you can determine the things you really need and start to eliminate the things you don’t.

Italian kitchen design is all about achieving tasteful lines so getting the right fittings is also essential. Therefore, it’s a good idea to consult with a number of companies to ensure you get the precise look you’re after.

By embracing these two simple ideas you can give yourself the best chance of achieving a bespoke, contemporary, Italian kitchen design.

Eco friendly kitchen design

posted by Kitchen & Bathroom Designer

The environment is an increasingly key issue, so wanting to plan an eco friendly kitchen design is understandable. Here are a few tips to creating a green kitchen.

eco-friendly-kitchen-design.jpg

For starters, let’s talk about lighting. Kitchen lights can take up a lot of electricity, especially when being used in the daytime to light up darker areas of the kitchen. An eco-friendly solution is to install a sky light or extra windows to bring as much natural light into the kitchen as possible and limit the amount of electricity needed. Domed skylights allow you to keep UV rays out and still enjoy a bright and airy kitchen.

Your kitchen floor is another area where you can look to be greener. Using materials like bamboo, cork, renewable wood and biodegradable lino are all environmentally friendly alternatives and still function and look great.

Insulation can be eco-friendly and limit the amount of heating you need, saving you money on bills. Spray foam insulation is the latest green craze in kitchen design and keeps the room warm when it gets cold outside.

Much like you floor, you can get your kitchen storage to be produced from environmentally friendly materials such as bamboo or any other kind of sustainably harvested wood. As an added touch, you can get built in recyling units, so it becomes less of a chore to seperate your papers and plastics.

If you want to go the extra mile then you can also get kitchen taps that will only turn on when an object is placed under the faucet. This means that taps won’t be left on when they’re not needed and water won’t be wasted.

To get hot water you can use some eco-friendly solutions like solar powered heaters or tankless water heaters that both reduce the amount of energy needed to turn water hot.

Also consider fitting energy efficient windows which come with a special kind of glass to reduce the amount of UV rays that enter the room but also retain light and heat.

We’ve got more information on eco-friendly kitchen design listed below and can also divert you to some of the leading retailers of environmentally friendly kitchen solutions.

Fitted Kitchen Design Advice

Fitted Kitchen Design Advice

If you’re planning a fitted kitchen design and aren’t completely sure about what to choose then here are some really useful things to keep in mind.

fitted-kitchen.jpg

Firstly, start by writing down what you want from your kitchen. For example, do you do a lot of cooking? If so, what appliances do you use the most and how would it most suit you to have things arranged? There’s no point having an excellent looking fitted kitchen if it doesn’t suit your needs.

Once you’ve decided the things you need in your ideal kitchen and where you’d like everything to be located you can then start to think about the theme. The theme will dictate what kind of fitted furniture you have installed. For instance if you go for a contemporary theme, then you’ll probably have more sleek finishes that create a very clean image. A country kitchen design on the other hand will be much more homely and employ wooden surfaces and cupboards.

By taking these things into consideration you’ll be in a much better position for when you eventually look around for your new kitchen. It also means that you won’t be easily persuaded by salespeople to accept the first suggestion they come up with.

Remember, a fitted kitchen design shouldn’t just be easy on the eye; it should also be functional and allow you to go about your day to day lives that little bit easier. It’s amazing just how many people get this wrong and end up with a kitchen that they never want to use because things haven’t been thought out properly. Doing your homework early on in a design can have a monumental effect on the success of your fitted kitchen.

Understanding the Basics of Kitchen Design

posted by Kitchen & Bathroom Designer

For most people, kitchen design is all about updating the appliances and cabinetry in the kitchen. But for me, it is all about getting down to the drawing board and creating a new layout altogether. The entire flow of the kitchen should change when you remodel it.
The focus should be to improvise on the functionality while keeping the aesthetic part in mind. There are some really old tried and tested kitchen design plans that work. You should choose one from amongst these based on the size and shape of your kitchen.
For long and narrow kitchens
If you have a long and narrow kitchen then you might want to opt for the one wall kitchen design. This is one of the most effective and inexpensive designs. Unlike the kitchen triangle, which is a very popular design this one has a linear design. It paves way for smooth functioning and flow of work in the kitchen.
But if you want to maximize the storage space, then this is not the very best design. You might have to use the L shaped design plans along with this one.
The classic triangle
The classic triangle is undoubtedly one of the most famous kitchen designs to have been ever invented. A triangle is formed with the sink, the oven/stove and the refrigerator at each ends. The distance between these three is maintained at optimum levels. Several designs like the corridor design use the classic kitchen triangle to maximize its effectiveness. It brings in more storage space into the kitchen.
The L shaped design
The L shaped design is perfect for large kitchens that always seem crowded. It does away with the storage woes completely and the most important part is that it still uses the classic kitchen triangle.

Top Kitchen Planning Tips

Top Kitchen Planning Tips

1 Plan your kitchen according to your lifestyle. A family will have different expectations from a kitchen than a young couple. Keep this also in mind when planning your storage.

Keep the existing service points in mind when planning the kitchen as rewiring and re-plumbing takes a lot of time and money.

3 Think about the ventilation points when planning your kitchen. Don’t plan cupboards over them.

4 Decide where your sink, drainer and dishwasher need to go first as this will be the biggest unit to fit in.top-kitchen-planning-tips.gif

5 Plan the main areas (sink, food preparation and hob) close together. This will make your kitchen more efficient.

6 When measuring the size of the kitchen, make sure that the exact shape of the walls is known. If there is an inwards corner in the room it will influence the shape of the worktop and the place of the wall-cupboards.

If you decide for a two-way galley kitchen, leave enough walking space between the two galleys.

If choosing a U-shaped kitchen, consider the floor space you will have left and maybe decide to use one of the legs of the U as a breakfast bar.

If you like to cook with a lot of fresh vegetables or you need a big freezer, consider a big fridge/freezer at the end of your worktop for loads of storage and easy access.
