Tall Order

The walnut stain on this armoire-style cabinet contrasts with the adjacent taupe-painted cabinets, lending warmth to the kitchen. Grouping the refrigerator with other appliances allows for generous stretches of countertops on both sides; beyond the appliances, the butler’s pantry is visible through the doorway.

Pop of Color

Painting the interior of kitchen cabinets a contrasting color — in this case apple green — is something both architect Gil Schafer and his color consultant, Eve Ashcraft, love to do. Aside from supplying a shot of color, it sets off the china.

Smart kitchen storage, such as the ceiling-height pantries shown here, can make a big difference in a galley kitchen. Glass-front cabinets make a great traditional choice for their ability to reflect light, especially when placed opposite windows. Interior cabinet lights perform a similar function if windows aren’t plentiful. A more modern option, floating shelves make kitchens feel light and airy. Open shelving can also be used in combination with traditional cabinetry to break up blocks of wall space and provide additional storage closer to the ceiling without closing in the room. The minimalist look of hardware-free cabinetry also works great since it eliminates visual disruptions of space.

Efficient Galley Kitchens Down the Aisle

To minimize problems with congestion when people are congregating or base-cabinets and appliances are open, the aisle should measure at least 4 to 6 feet wide, with the sink and refrigerator on one wall and the range on the opposite one.

Here there is plenty of room to move around, and a peninsula off the end of the U-shaped layout creates an eat-in space.

Bold color isn’t the only way to create excitement. Kitchen designer Vasi Ypsilantis used these oversized light fixtures with black fabric shades from Tech Lighting to add some wow: “They’re about 2 feet in diameter and are slightly larger than you would expect for the space,” she says. “But they give a great sense of depth perception and create drama in a room with a typical low ceiling.” The luxurious cabinets are Poggenpohl’s Marsh Oak Veneer with a rich near-black stain.
