Retro Kitchen Design Sets and Ideas

Retro Kitchen Design Sets and Ideas

It is fun to once in a while look back and see what was considered cool and trendy during the past. In this post we take a look at the kitchens of yesteryear – those from 1920s to 1960s.

Kitchens then used bold colors like yellow, blue and jadeite green with checkerboard floors and vivid patterns. Also prominent were the painted cabinets, glass knobs, vintage linens and conspicuous electrical appliances that were meant to be used for long periods. In those days, the throwaway mentality was unheard of and people preferred to repair and re-use rather than replace.

Finding retro kitchens on the web is not an easy task. We could always use more help. If you come across any retro kitchen that you think need to be featured here, please mention them in the comments. Also we run a steady stream of cool posts like this at Home Designing and if you like to be notified when we have more such inspiring posts, please subscribe to our feed or newsletter!

Rare as they come, there are actually a few terrific websites out there that are dedicated to documenting and digitizing past kitchens. Antique Home Styles is one such website and we would highly recommend them if you are on the look out for such kitchens. Here are a few snaps from their collection:

Kitchen Backsplashes

Kitchen Backsplashes

Kitchen-Backsplashes

Backsplashes have an important job to do.

A functional and visually pleasing backsplash should be high on your list of priorities for any new kitchen.

However, you shouldn’t start planning how you want your backsplash to look until you’ve picked out the countertops for your new kitchen design. A backsplash sits on the countertop and to create a tasteful design, you need to know what will work best with the material you’ve chosen.

If you don’t like the idea of having two independent materials for your countertop and backsplash, you can of course use the same one for both. Although using one material can create a very sleek finish, it doesn’t make a feature of the backsplash, which traditionally is an important factor of a kitchen design.

We’ve got more information and useful articles on kitchen backsplash design listed below.

Choosing a style for your new kitchen and selecting from the endless options of materials available can be daunting. What materials suite your style? Are Vanilla Bean Glaze cabinets with Antique Copper hardware the perfect fit for your country kitchen? Searching for a streamlined stainless steel faucet to coordinate with your contemporary kitchen? Hoping to design a traditional kitchen around granite counter tops? Perhaps soft metallic blinds will blend with the sleek materials in your modern kitchen.

Choosing your style, as well as materials, is an important venture. On average, consumers who are remodeling their kitchen spend about 16 percent of their budget on labor; the remaining is spent on materials. Exciting advances in materials at every budget level are available which are beautiful, practical, durable, and environmentally responsible.

Traditional
Architectural details such as crown molding, raised wood paneling and rich, deep colors abound in the traditional kitchen.

Modern

Kitchen Storage

posted by Kitchen & Bathroom Designer

The next step in planning your new kitchen is to plan enough storage to suit your needs. As already explained in Kitchen Shapes, different shapes of kitchens automatically provide different amounts of storage space. However, there are a lot more possibilities and styles than you might think. In this section storage solutions will be discussed and useful tips will be given to make the most of even the smallest of spaces.

Below-worktop area

It is obvious that the bigger the worktop, the more you can store below it. After you have planned the position of your sink, fridge and hob/oven, the rest of the space below the worktop is yours to play with, because cupboards are not the only option.

Storage below the worktop is especially handy for heavy items such as electrical equipment and heavy pots, pans and oven dishes. Think about how many of those items you have and how much storage space you have to give to those items. Remember to leave enough room for expansion as in the future you will buy more utensils and the items you already have will take up more space than you think!kitchen-storage.gif

Products like bottles of wine and vegetables that don’t need to go in the fridge will also need their space beneath the worktop. Think of different ways to store them than the usual cupboard. For bottles for example a cupboard doesn’t really work, as you can’t see the bottles in the back of your cupboard. Think of a cabinet that you can pull out or maybe a pullout trolley. If you are a big wine lover you can think of special shelves to put your wine on display.

Vegetables must be kept in a dry place to prevent them from early decay so don’t store them too close to an oven or a hob. Wicker baskets will give a rustic accent to you kitchen and will keep your vegetables dry and dark.

Most of your cutlery will be stored below the worktop as well. Try to store your cutlery close to the dishwasher or sink for quick storage after cleaning. Drawers are still the best storage option for cutlery, but you may find it handy to keep you ladles and wooden spoons in a jar on your worktop. Knives can be kept at a magnetic knife holder that you can attach to your wall or in a separate knife-block on your worktop. Make sure though that your worktop is free from too much clutter as this will give your kitchen a messy look. Read the rest of this entry »

Lift is a new kitchen concept that fulfils our daily needs for modular and dynamic systems. Apartments and houses are becoming smaller therefore we need to design products that are able to offer a lot and at the same time be compact. Our design features different sliding (up and down) modules containing all the necessary tools a kitchen must have. While your not working or cooking you can close the sliding units together and create different kinds of sideboards. Lift can be well positioned in a one bedroom apartment, in a studio, in a loft or in a open space kitchen / living room area.

As a barrier-free, mobile and flexible kitchen, the Ideal Kitchen, with its L-shaped countertop, offers a high degree of design freedom and a very high level of design, in the opinion of the jurors. The countertop is suspended from the wall, so that it can be set at any height. A 17 cm-wide rear spine serves not only as a storage option for kitchen implements, spices and electric appliances, but also to keep the wall clean. Mobile containers and a kitchen cabinet offer additional storage space.

Since space comes as a premium, we need to design for a flexible lifestyle. Case in point is the kitchen. This design by Wiwat Pitakpongsanit takes multidisciplinary worktops to the extreme. This kitchen counter top is a place to cook, serve, meet, party, eat, and work. By reconfiguring the different sections, you can create a work surface to meet your needs.

Designed to improve the mentality of a kitchen both physically and mentally. Every function a traditional kitchen has is hidden behind the kitchen wall allowing easier clear up of the kitchen. The form of hiding saves the room of the house, which exhibits a sense of freedom and comfort. Psychologically, hiding state conveys satisfaction to some extent for only the kitchen host to know exactly where all the things are. The tile colors can be changed and arranged to fit your personal style.

The CookIsland table consists of a worktop with integrated table top. The integrated dining table can seat up to five people. Centered on a rotation point the table can be pulled out, pushed in or rotated. This allows the CookIsland to be positioned right up against the wall of a small room, making optimal use of function and space. The front of the worktop, with drawers and a three-plate ceramic hob, is available in seven high-gloss colors. The body is white or silvery white.

Evolving without losing your origins and this is the case with the new kitchen L’Evoluzione. It frees the kitchen from classical structures and any imposition laid down by space, providing solutions that offer the practicality of the kitchen with all the atmosphere of the living zone.

The new dimensions of the furniture increase the height of the space that contains them, making them more similar to the furnishings in the living areas. In this way, the cabinets reach new, more rational heights, designed to avoid an ugly overlap of the suspended components. Large sliding doors, which can be made of glass or with the same finish as that of the rest of the kitchen, create alternating opening and closure movements that animate the space and become a distinguishing feature of it

Kitchen Design

When it comes to kitchen design and kitchen layouts, no matter how much you spend on upgrades and high end materials, if it is not properly laid out, you will get that investment back when it comes time to sell. In no other room is the phrase “form follows function” more appropriate than in the kitchen. By contrast, if you have a kitchen that not only looks good, but is also allows for proper traffic flow and adequate work space, it will not only benefit you in your daily activities but it will also translate to the bottom line when it comes time to sell.

Kitchen Design

Potential home buyers are looking for kitchens that provide a roomy work space and that are open to the rest of the home, since kitchens tend to be the most used room in a house. Even when you have guests over, often everyone gathers in the kitchen.
