his classic kitchen with white cabinets, marble accents, and traditional details gets personalized with an on-display pot rack and sliver of sunny yellow paint.
An all-white kitchen goes country by simply adding a blue beaded-board backsplash, displaying mismatched cabinetry hardware, and showcasing beloved collections.
Painting the interior of kitchen cabinets a contrasting color — in this case apple green — is something both architect Gil Schafer and his color consultant, Eve Ashcraft, love to do. Aside from supplying a shot of color, it sets off the china.
Architect Ken Pursley converted an exterior porch in this home into a family-worthy kitchen. “Kitchens should have at least two doorways, so they’re part of the circular flow of the house. Plus there is room for the family. The color on the walls is sophisticated but doesn’t take away from the standout features of the room.”
For a stylish industrial-chic look on a budget, shop for particle board or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) cabinets covered with Thermofoil or melamine. Thermofoil gives the look of paint, including high-gloss lacquer effects like the cabinets shown here, without the drips or brush marks. It’s made by fusing thin vinyl onto the substrate with heat. Melamine is a plastic made from resin, pressed wood, and paper and is designed to be relatively maintenance free. To present a sleek wall of color, the cabinet drawers and doors in this kitchen were installed without hardware. The units rest on baseboards made from aluminum bought from a metal supply shop.
Raised-panel doors provide a refined complement to the distressed knotty alder wood of the cabinetry and exposed beams of this kitchen.
Common characteristics include cabinets in knotty pine, hickory or alder; ceiling beams; and warm, rich shades of brown, red, green and yellow.
Rustic kitchens often have a regional American flair: Adirondack, Southwestern, Mountain West or Pacific Northwest.
