A Shell Collector's Bathroom (August 13, 2009)

Interior designer Harry Heissmann, of Albert Hadley Inc. in New York, achieves a seaside escape in his room designed for the Kohler Design Center by blending shell and stone textures while elevating modernism in the bath. Enlarge photo     Inspired by the soft pink underside of a queen conch shell, A Shell Collector's Bathroom is delicately accentuated by a Vapour™ Pink finish on Cast Iron fixtures. Onyx-colored Terrazo panels (Ann Sacks® Metron Bisazza-Mosaico) boldly frame the Iron Works Historic™ bath with a hint of shimmer, evoking a sense of mystery akin to the depths of the ocean. A room's definition comes from the unexpected things found in it--like a rough, pebbled floor next to smooth walls," says Heissmann. "You have to keep it interesting to make it inviting." Enlarge photo     With the help of an ingenious selection of Ann Sacks tiles, A Shell Collector's Bathroom captures the gradual transition from granular sand to rounded sea stones to sharp shell fragments common to the ocean floor. Iridescent ceiling panels form a watery canopy while the back wall is built with Ann Sacks' Bali stacked pebbles in Ocala Berry to give the room depth. Heissmann's brilliant use of textures and colors is demonstrated with the Ann Sacks mosaic in Constellation Ginger, which creates the partition wall between the toilet and bath and surrounds the Dolce Vita™ lavatory in Vapour Pink.     Enlarge photo The lavatory is further emphasized by a custom shell-embellished mirror and metallic, beaded curtain that Heissmann says, "drapes the vanity beautifully like a vintage couture gown." Glass shelves on both sides of the vanity are decorated with starfish, a bottle of shells, conch shells and a variety of other aquatic ornaments. A San Raphael™ toilet in Black Black™, Finial® Art lavatory faucet with Serpentine Bronze™ tap handles and an Iron Works® Historic bath in Vapour Pink add further drama to this sea-lover's cherished bathroom design.
